Circular Dichroism (CD) Analysis

Circular Dichroism Analysis (CD Analysis) enables the quantity of chiral structures in a protein to be measured.

Chiral molecules absorb different forms of polarised light to different degrees. If the light is circularly polarised the effect is known as circular dichroism.

AltaBioscience provides unrivalled expertise and accuracy. Our technique measures the absorption of left- and right-handed circularly polarised light in the ultra-violet and visible regions of the electro-magnetic spectrum using a Jasco CD spectrometer (also known as a circular dichroism spectropolarimeter or circular dichrograph), which is then used to calculate the CD signal. These signals are then compared to known patterns to determine structures.

Circular Dichroism has a number of applications including:

  • Structure determination of an unknown protein
  • Quality control analysis of different batches of sample production
  • Determination of protein conditions to minimise protein unfolding and aggregation
